Steilacoom won’t wait for 2017 review, kicking us out now

IMG_1865 (1)

While in Portland for a couple days for Peter to continue his collaboration on curriculum development with a fellow art teacher, we received a call from a reporter asking for our “response to Paul’s letter”. My heart sank the minute her words hit my ear. It was our biggest fear. They aren’t willing to wait and see what the town votes next year, rather they are wanting us out now due to utility code violation (that we could actually remedy) and a pretty restrictive interpretation of a gray area in the code. Well not now… in 30 days, on September 17 to be exact.

We don’t know what we are going to do at this point… Any legal advice or suggestions are appreciated. The selfish part of me wishes it wasn’t so close to the start of the school year so that we’d have more time to make a bigger change but since that’s not the case, we’ll need to figure out a solution for this next year and then go from there.

I don’t recognize this town anymore. We felt so welcomed and appreciated up until this point. Now it just feels hostile and elitist.

Way to fail teachers, education, the environment, and families, Steilacoom. Please post the contact information for the city so interested parties can write to these genius city planners.

Are you guys interested in a tiny house community where a couple families buy land together and then put tiny houses on it? It is something I’ve always been interested in and just wanted to know if that is a possibility at all?

    • Shannon says:

Hi kassandra! We are certainly interested in a community of tiny houses. I think they are such a brilliant way to live small and be in good community! Do you live in one?

  4. Denise says:

Hi Shannon and Peter. I’m very interestedin tiny homes and your is beautiful and functional. It seems very convenient and underhanded that the town changed their position about revisiting the issue at the next meeting and are now handing you an ultimatum. Not only are they taking away your home but your lively hood as well if you both have to give up your teaching positions before school starts. Pretty fed up with the people in power abusing it. Is this from the whole town council or just Paul Loveless? So I’ll be more than happy to write to the people you have listed in support of you both. 5yrs in the community educating their children and this is how they repay you. Ridiculous. Good luck to you.

    • Shannon Johnson says:

Hi Denise! Thanks for your support. We are not privy to how the town made their decision or which individuals if any are specifically behind it. Our hope is that someone in the office of the town will recognize the unfortunate way things have occurred and will allow us the time we need.
